A Personal Letter from the Director: Ben Levin

When I found Sled Hockey, I found a purpose.

I’m a storyteller at heart, driven by a deep passion for shaping moments into meaningful visual experiences. As a director, I thrive on transforming ideas into content that moves people. Nothing has compared to the stories shared with me by the US Paralympic Sled Hockey team.

I was born with cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia, which meant a childhood filled with challenges, including over a dozen major orthopedic surgeries. I often wondered where I fit in, where my community was.

In the seventh grade, I met Frank Hallman, head coach of the Philadelphia Hammerheads, a youth Sled Hockey team. He invited me to play, and I never looked back.

In spaces designed for the able-bodied, I moved slowly with crutches. But on the ice, even in a worn-down sled, I was fast. For the first time, I had a way to release my energy, connect with teammates, and belong to something bigger. I had found my community.

Sled Hockey introduced me to disabled people who lived fully: playing sports, raising families, and pursuing careers. They didn’t let their disabilities define them. Since then, neither have I.

Metal & Ice not only explores the differences in personality that this team shares, but the diversity in disability that has brought us all together. Some players were born disabled like myself, some lost a limb during tragedy, others overseas serving our country. In the end, we all live lives off the beaten path.

Today, I’m a Director and Editor in Los Angeles currently working for Razorfish, a part of the largest ad agency in the world, Publicis Groupe. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with brands like PayPal, Amazon, Converse, Monster Energy, and Uber Eats, as well as working closely with artists and musicians to bring their unique visions to life as a Creative Director for EMPIRE Records. I bring the same level of curiosity, precision, and care to every frame.

This film combines my two passions: Sled Hockey and storytelling. I want to capture the gritty glory of this sport and show the world how incredible these elite athletes are. I want disabled kids to feel the same inspiration I felt when I joined the sport. More importantly, I want to create a film that gives the disabled community ‘characters’ that we can relate to, something missing from the media landscape today.

Through Metal & Ice, I hope to inspire them to find their own community and their purpose.
